Digital payments are increasingly popular, even in Italy. This was revealed by the latest bulletin of the Innovative Payments Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano. In 2021, digital transactions exceeded 327 billion euros, with a growth of 21% compared to the previous year.
But the real explosion comes from payments via smartphones and smartwatches: they have grown by 106% in one year. Overall, the set of operators active in mobile payments – from Google Pay to Apple Pay, via Satispay – now occupies 26% of the market.
Projections suggest that digital payments will be worth over 3 trillion by 2030. In Europe alone, an increase of 64% is expected, followed by a second increase of 39%.
The rebound effect compared to the pandemic emergency of 2020 is certainly an important component, but it is in relative terms that the growth is even more appreciable. In fact, in 2021, the penetration of electronic payments on household consumption reached 38%, with a growth of five percentage points.
commented Valeria Portale, director of the Innovative payments observatory.
