While Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called on China to stop the exercise it is carrying out in and around the Taiwan Strait, US Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said in a statement after meeting with Kishida, “The United States will not allow China to isolate Taiwan.”
Nancy Pelosi , Speaker of the US House of Representatives , arrived in Japan, the last stop of her Asian tour, after visiting Taiwan And South Korea. Pelosi met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in the capital Tokyo. It was learned that the duo, who had a breakfast meeting, discussed regional and global issues, while it was noted that Kishida expressed hope that Pelosi will continue to lead efforts to strengthen the Washington-Tokyo alliance and realize his vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Speaking to reporters at the prime minister’s office after meeting with Pelosi, Kishida said, “We agreed to work together to ensure peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.” Referring to the exercises that China launched in the region in retaliation for Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, which resulted in Chinese missiles hitting Japan’s exclusive economic zone as well, Kishida said, “China’s behavior has a serious impact on the peace and stability of the region and the world, and that the exercises should be stopped immediately. “I said we were calling,” he said. It was learned that Kishida and Pelosi also discussed issues concerning the two countries, such as the denuclearization of North Korea and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in addition to Taiwan.
PRAISE TO TAIWAN DEMOCRACY Underlining that her
visit is not about changing Taiwan’s status quo, but about maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait, Pelosi said, “They can try to prevent visitors from different places from going to Taiwan, but they will not be able to isolate Taiwan by preventing our visits.” Pelosi also praised Taiwan’s diversity and success in technology and business, while also touching upon Taiwan’s tough struggles for democracy.
