After the release of the first gameplay video, new details emerge on The Callisto Protocol , the sci-fi horror from Striking Distance Studios. Through the pages of the PlayStation Blog, Glen Schofield provides new details about the gameplay, the combat system and a new technique developed by the team called “ Horror Engineering “.

To bring the world of The Callisto Protocol to life, the development team used a technique called “Horror Engineering”, capable of generating unforgettable scares . It is about merging and amalgamating various components such as atmosphere, tension, violence, a sense of helplessness and humanity to raise the tension and trigger an unprecedented sense of terror.

The sense of horror originates first of all from the atmosphere . Callisto is a distressing, bare and isolated world, which alone is enough to generate anxiety. It took us some time to study suitable lighting to create a constant sense of fear for what might be lurking in the shadows.

We have also worked hard to take full advantage of the PS5’s 3D audio capabilities, using the effects of acoustic ray tracing, diffraction and portaling to achieve total immersion in the game world. From the chilling echo effects produced by the verses of the monstrous Biophage along the dark corridors, to the ambient hum from the prison’s broken machinery, audio plays a fundamental role in instilling a sense of anguish, isolation and despair.

As for the combat system, Striking Distance Studios emphasizes that it has devised a strategic combat system that forces the player into a close encounter with the horrible creatures that he will face. Thanks to a peculiar gravitational weapon called GRP, the team tried to create a perfect balance between hand-to-hand combat and firefights.

The Black Iron guards use GRP to keep prisoners in check, but thanks to this weapon Jacob will be able to face the Biophage with creative solutions. To get out of a critical situation, the player can stun an oncoming monster or even hurl it into a turbine or some kind of environmental threat nearby.

We remind you that The Callisto Protocol will be available on starting December 2, 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series S / X.
