The Wikimedia Foundation will no longer accept cryptocurrency donations

Recently, Wikipedia staff voted to remove cryptocurrency donations among the possible options in order to support the platform, with updates that have been expected since last month. The Wikimedia Foundation has had the opportunity to clarify the issue by talking about a big update, as reported on the pages of The Verge , and it is now official that all donations of this type will no longer be accepted, both for what concerns Bitcoin and for other forms of cryptocurrencies.

As if that were not enough, the Bitpay account will be closed in order to avoid any kind of future donation that could arise. Find below the official statement that clarified the situation:

The Wikimedia Foundation has decided to stop the direct acceptance of cryptocurrencies as a donation method. We started this in 2014 based on requests from our volunteers and the donor community. We are making this decision based on recent feedback from the communities themselves. Specifically, we will close our Bitpay account, which will then remove the ability for us to accept direct payments in cryptocurrencies as a donation method. We will continue to keep an eye on this, and appreciate the feedback and consideration given by people in the Wikimedia movement. We will remain flexible and responsive to finding volunteers.

It was Molly White, known as GorillaWarefare , who launched a proposal to stop everything, calling cryptocurrencies an extremely risky investment, and highlighting that they are not in line with the sustainability to which the foundation aims, considering that the sector is particularly expensive in terms of energy consumed all over the world. With 232 votes in favor and 94 against , the request was then officially accepted, with the official communication of the stop to donations through this method which finally arrived.
