Everyone knows that smoking is bad. A recent study found that those who smoke continuously have a 10% increased risk of developing any disease.
As many as 100 million deaths worldwide were caused by smoking in the twentieth century and will continue to increase in this century. In Italy there are 93,000 dead. Smoking every day can cause at least 27 different diseases (heart disease, cancer and lungs). In a cigarette there are 4,000 substances toxic to the body and 40 with tumor potential. Almost half of children inhale passive smoke and 65,000 die from related diseases.
A recent study compared smokers and non-smokers, discovering a greater risk in the former of developing 56 different diseases , including cancer. From the questionnaire to which they were submitted, 32.4% smoked regularly, of which 74% were men and 3% were women. The study was followed for 11 years, in which more than 48,800 participants died. Additionally, new illnesses occurred in 1.14 million participants.
Smoking was therefore associated with an increased incidence of 56 specific diseases and a greater risk of death from 22 specific causes. Regular smokers have a 10% increased risk of developing any disease. 19.6% of male deaths and 2.8% of female deaths are related to regular smoking. The study therefore confirms the serious consequences that smoking has on the health of men and women. In addition to this, the benefits of quitting smoking were also seen, they are immediate and long-term:
- within 20 minutes the heart rate slows down and blood pressure drops
- brings the level of carbon monoxide in the blood back to normal after 12 hours
- from 2 to 12 weeks circulation and lung function improve
- after 1 to 9 months of quitting, cough and shortness of breath improve
- after 1 year the risk of coronary heart disease is halved
- 5 to 15 years, after quitting, the risk of stroke is reduced to the same level as a non-smoker
- after 10 years the risk of lung cancer halves and the risks of cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, cervix and pancreas decrease
- after 15 years the risk of coronary heart disease is similar to a non-smoker
